Knowing the very Basic Poker Game Rules

This is especially for beginners who have just started to play a card game called poker. Before playing, you should know that.

  • Poker Cards, Suits, and Card Rankings: Poker is played with a standard pack of 52 cards including 4 suits (spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds, arranged as per their order of value) of each card. The cards are ranked from high to low in this order: Ace (A), King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J), 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.
  • Number of Players in Poker: In poker, a minimum of two and a maximum of nine players can play at a time on a table.
  • Seating Arrangement: The players are generally seated in a round-table arrangement in poker and the turns always go clockwise on the table.
  • Dealer Button: The dealer button shows that the player is the stimulated dealer and would get to act at the last in the hand. The dealer button keeps on rotating clockwise in every hand which means everyone on the table would get a chance to be the dealer or to be on the dealer button.
  • Deposit Amount in Poker: Before you start playing poker online, you must deposit some amount that is needed to play a game on that platform. That amount will be credited to your poker account and will be reflected in the same. You can use this deposit amount to buy the chips for the cash games and also tickets in case of tournaments.
  • Buy-in: Every poker game involves a buy-in amount that the player exchanges for chips that are used to play the game.
  • Chips In Poker: Chips are also identified as plastic money that you get in exchange for a buy-in amount. There are different colors of chips signifying different values and are used in place of real money to play the game on the table. A poker player must buy chips of a certain amount to take part in any poker game.
  • Pot in Poker: In poker, a pot refers to the sum of money that players wager during a single hand or game, as per the betting rules of the variant being played.
  • Rake in Poker: A sum of money charged by the poker platform you are using to play the game in the form of ‘Rake’ would be a share of the total pot amount that you have put in the pot for a certain game.
  • Types of Cards Dealt in Poker: All poker hands contain five cards (2 hole cards and 3 community cards) and at showdown, the highest hand wins.
  • Hand in Poker: A hand in the game is the combination of five cards that are dealt to players on the table.

Hand Rankings

Hand Rankings

Before we start with your poker training, we would like you to know about the ‘Top 10 Hand Rankings of Poker’. Hand Ranking is basically a combination of cards that you make after you are dealt with five cards on the table.

The best hand ranking has the maximum probability to win. So, it is most important for you to first understand and learn about the different hand rankings and their order of sequence as per their value in poker.

You can arrange your cards according to the following hand rankings that are presented to you in descending order.

1. Royal Flush

This hand is a combination of cards – A, K, Q, J, and 10 of the same suit.

2. Straight Flush

This hand comprises five cards of the same suit in a consecutive sequence, like 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

3. Four Of A Kind/Quads

In this particular hand, there are four cards of equal rank, that is why it is called the Four of a Kind or Quads. Like A (of diamonds), A (of spades), A (of clubs), A (of hearts), and any other card as the fifth card.

4. Full House/Full Boat

In this hand, there are three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank. A combination of 10, 10, 10, 8, 8 is an example of Full House.

5. Flush

This hand comprises any five cards of the same suit, but not in sequential order. Like 2, 6, K, 8, 4 (all of the diamonds suit). If two players have a flush then the person with the highest card of that suit wins.

6. Straight

Straight is when there are five cards in a sequence regardless of their suit. Like 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (of any suit). If two players have a straight, then the person with the higher card wins.

7. Three Of A Kind / Set

Three cards of the same rank and the remaining two are not a pair. Like K, K, K, 7, 4 is an example of Three of a Kind.

8. Two Pair

In this hand, there are two pairs of different ranks and one card of any other rank. Like in 8, 8, 5, 5, J.

9. Pair/One Pair

This is a hand in which two cards of the same rank make a pair and the remaining three are from different ranks. Like in 9, 9, 5, 2, K.

10. High Card

In a High Card hand, there are no combinations formed, so the card with the highest rank is valued. In case of a tie the player having the second-highest card wins, and if necessary, the third-highest, fourth-highest, and smallest card can be used to break the tie.

Just being familiar with these Hand Rankings would not help you get all the money from the table but learning them thoroughly and practicing will work for you if you wish to win. So, learn them and win real money with Acehigh.

Playing Rounds/ Betting Rounds in Poker

Playing Rounds/ Betting Rounds in Poker

Poker is highly enjoyable once you start betting and play with smartness. It’s a game in which your presence of mind and bluffing skills work. When playing your game according to the poker card rules, you need to understand the different betting rounds in the game. They are as follows:

1. Blinds

It is the first or foremost round of poker which starts before the actual betting rounds begin. In this round, the two players sitting immediately clockwise to the dealer are known as Blinds. The first player just left to the dealer is known as Small Blind, whereas the second player left to the dealer is known as Big Blind. They initiate the bet which is mandatory for them as per the poker card rules. The total size of these blinds will determine the stakes of the poker game you would play. The bet amount posted by the big blind is double the bet amount posted by the small blind. Once they bet, the other players can choose to take any betting action about which you will learn after this. In case there are only two players left in the game, then the dealer is expected to make the ‘big Blind’, whereas the other player has to make the ‘small blind’.

These forced bets or blinds are made to collect some money/chips in the game which would work as a stimulator for the players to play the game. In case of a situation where you do not have enough chip stack to make the blind bet, you have to put everything you possess (chips) at stake. After this round, the other betting rounds start.

2. Pre-Flop

It is the betting round that starts when all the players are dealt only with the face-down hole cards.

3. Flop

This round begins when the dealer deals three face-up community cards on the table. These cards are common for all and are used to make the best combination by all the players. Again, bets are placed in this round.

4. Turn

After the Flop round, we have the Turn round in which the dealer deals the fourth community card on the table and then the betting begins.

5. River

This is the round where the dealing of cards ends with the last or fifth community card. In this round of betting, the bets are made after the fifth/final community card is dealt. Betting in every round continues till each player either matches the bets placed or folds up. If no bets are made in a round, then the round gets completed after every player has taken the action to ‘check’.

6. Showdown

This is the last or the final round in a poker game as per the poker game rules. In this round, the winner is decided by displaying the cards on the table. After the river round is over with more than one player remaining on the table, the last person who put a bet/raise will display his/her cards in this round. In case, if there was no bet placed in the last round, the player who is sitting immediately left to the dealer button shall display his/her cards first.

Basic Actions with Cards

Basic Actions With Poker Cards Rules

The motive behind playing poker is winning money apart from just relaxation and enjoyment. In poker, the game starts right after the cards are dealt by the dealer and then it goes clockwise starting from the player who is sitting just left to the dealer.

To win, every player has to take certain actions when it is their chance to play with the dealt cards on the table/board. Choosing any of the following actions is totally at your discretion; it will display your poker skills.

Bet

Betting is the key element of poker that drives a player to play the game. A player can opt to ‘bet’ in a hand even when none of the players have chosen to ‘bet’ in that particular round. Once you choose to ‘bet’, your opponents have to either ‘call’ or ‘raise’ in order to stay in the game.

Raise

‘Raise’, as the name suggests, is the action taken to increase the existing betting amount in a particular hand. This action can be taken to match the highest bet and even make a greater bet than the previous one. The subsequent players are then supposed to ‘call the raise’ or ‘re-raise’ in order to retain themselves in that hand.

Call

By making a ‘call’ in poker, you intend to match the highest bet or raise to stay active in the hand.

Check

A player choosing this action indicates his/her refusal to bet (or open the betting, in case he is the first player on the table). Taking this action would lead to passing on your turn to the next player on your left side at the poker table. A player can check only when there is no betting in the existing round.

Fold

Taking this action would mean that you drop out of the current hand as a result of low hand ranking or no combination of cards at all.

Betting Limits

Betting Limits in Poker Game Rules

Can you imagine poker without betting? We know that the answer is a definite ‘no’ as betting creates thrill and doubles the spirit of the players to play and win. When a player chooses to bet, he shows the ability to stay in the game. Certain betting structures are possible in the most famous poker variants. These are:

No Limit

In the games that offer a ‘No Limit’ betting structure, a player can bet or raise the bet to any amount without any limit.

Fixed Limit

Poker variants that offer this structure have already set a predefined limit of betting for a particular round or game.

Pot Limit

This structure is mostly used in the famous poker variant known as Pot Limit Omaha which allows a player to bet or raise the betting amount up to and including the total size of the pot.

Table Stakes and All-in

Poker Rules in Table Stakes and All-In

Being an Indian, you must have heard of the tales of Mahabharata where the Pandavas put everything they had at stake in a betting game against Kauravas. This made them lose everything they possessed. At Acehigh, we do not want you to become the Pandavas and drain all your money in one game, so the games played here are ‘Table Stakes’ which means that a player can only utilize those many chips in the game that he had at the start of the game. No additions can be made further during the course of the hand.

While playing a hand, it may happen at times that you fall short of the chips to call the bet, so in that case, the player is declared to be in an ‘All-In’ situation in which he/she can only be eligible to win the share of the pot up to which he/she has the chips and not to the entire pot money. All the remaining portions of the pot are moved to a ‘Side Pot’, which cannot be won by him/her (the All-in player). If multiple players are declared ‘All-in’ on the same hand, there is a big possibility of having many side pots.

Cash Games & Tournaments

Cash Games & Tournaments

Both Cash Games and Tournaments open the door of real money winnings for you, but deciding on what to play is completely your choice and may depend upon your interest.

Cash Games vs Tournaments

Cash Games vs Tournaments

Are you confused about which game genre to choose? Let’s make it easy for you by comparing both of them. You can also go for both once you understand their basics.

  • Cash Games are mostly played on a table whereas there can be multiple tables as well in a tournament.

  • In cash games, players buy chips from money, and there is usually a minimum and maximum buy-in amount, depending on the stakes of the tables. In tournaments, players ‘ buy in’ for the same amount and are all usually given the same amount of tournament chips.

  • Cash Games give the liberty to a player to quit the game at any time and get their chips exchanged for cash, whereas in tournaments a player cannot leave as per his/her wish instead a winner is announced at the end of the tournament and that is when you can get paid for where you finished. The chips you hold in a tournament cannot be exchanged for money, and these only determine your position in the game.

  • In Cash Games, you can play again after losing money/chips by making another buy-in, whereas in tournaments if you lose then you are out of the game and there is no re-entry in the same tournament after that.

  • In Cash Games, you play for ‘pots’ with real money, whereas in tournaments, you get tournament chips to play against the fixed buy-in fee that you have paid.

  • The blinds in Cash Games remain constant and do not increase. On the other hand, the blinds can increase an infinite number of times, based on the blind structure for that tournament.

  • In ‘No Limit’ and ‘Pot Limit’ tournaments there is no limit to raise the bet. However, for ‘Fixed Limit’ tournaments, only three raises and one bet are permitted.

Note: The rules of the tournaments may differ depending upon the terms and conditions for the specific tournament.
